  (...continued from the previous page)
class of twenty two''.

As if on cue a whistle blew,
on some far distant train.
The old floodlights just faded out,
and cold snows turned to rain.
The strange illusions disappeared,
the night turned cold and black.
And dreadful shivers uncontrolled,
moved up and down my back.

Soaking wet and freezing cold,
I headed back to home.
Troubled by these weird events,
I’d witnessed there
    alone.
And since that time I’ve oft returned,
on cold November nights.
But no steam trains nor visions stirred,
beneath the old
floodlights.

The town of Toyah, Texas,
with compelling memories.
Perhaps the ghosts of years gone by,
still drift on winter’s breeze.
Old buildings fraught with stories told,
behind their boarded doors.
Of ranching days and old steam trains,
part of her western lore.
