and she seemed exhausted. She was sitting in a rocking chair and trying to hush the baby she held to her chest. She looked up at me, and I just smiled. You know the smile you give someone when you know how they feel and wish you could help, a kind of awkward yet encouraging smile. She kissed the baby's head, and then the crying stopped, and they were gone.
Shortly after my father passed in that house we happened to meet a couple of old ladies.
One of them told us how her ancestors had homesteaded right where we lived. She said they got a great deal on the land because no one else wanted it.
You see a pioneer wagon had stopped there because they had all come down with illness and did not have the strength to continue on their way. They all passed away and were buried right there on that land. I do not remember how many children, but she did say there was a baby. We had never met her before and had never told her my experiences. I never got her name or saw her again, but I pray that pioneer family may someday find their peace.|
