My ghost story about Vernal isn't about my own experience but rather about the experience of my great-grandmother, mother of my grandmother who is a long-time Vernal resident. I lived in Vernal from the age of 1 to about the age of 3 and 1/2 and lived in the old territorial governor's mansion before it was renovated. My great-grandma and great-grandpa had moved into a house in the area that used to be known as Hayden, UT around 1909-1910 and she was alone in the house with my grandmother who was around 1 or 2 years old because my great-grandpa was out hunting. The house had a rocking chair in it that was from it's previous owners and it was basically one big room, as were many cabins of that era, with a wash area and sink pump with a bed in the corner and pot-bellied stove at one end. That night as she lay in bed with my grandmother in her arms going off to sleep she began to hear a creaking coming from the rocking chair in the corner behind her. She tried not to notice it, dismissing it as the old cabin settling and attempted to go to sleep.

Finally she could not ignore it any longer and turned around it bed to see a beautiful red-haired woman in the chair that was smiling at her and looked sorrowful at the same time. She could see right through her. Frightened out of her mind, she dove under the covers until morning and upon emerging from the bed immediately went to the neighbors about

1/4 mile away who told her a chilling story. The couple that had lived there about 5 years before them were newlyweds and he was very abusive and she was beautiful and had red hair. He also beat her to death one night in a fit of rage when she was about 6 months pregnant and ran out of town never to be seen again. My great-grandma had seen her ghost but never did see her again after that however she would hear the chair creak at times. Perhaps the ghost was longing for her own child when she saw my great-grandmother and grandma together, we will ne ver know. I do know that this story is true because my grandma never told a lie in her entire life. Maybe the cabin still stands somewhere around Vernal .

I Was Sitting Alone One Night Watching TV When Out Of The Blue A Hanging Plant Just Inside The Front Door Went To Swinging Big Time ( As If Someome Had Ran Right Smack Into It...?) I Work In The Oilfields & Am Gone ALOT For Days To Weeks @ A Time.

During My Absents My Wife Has Been Woken Up Several Times In The Middle Of The Night To A Dark Figured Man Approching The Bed & Even Leaning Over Her, Which Freaked Her Out Big time Since We Have We Have 3 Dogs That Sleep In The Bedroom Too & Freakout @ Every Little Sound Or Movement But Just Sat There Dumbfounded & Did Not Even Let Out A Peep.. Also There Are Times When Even After Cleaning & Vacuming The House We Could Walk Out Of The Room & When We Walk Back In There Will Be Change On The Floor, My Wife Seems To Think That Might Be Her Grandma Since When She Was Alive She Would Leave Change Laying All Around. Vernal Is Deffenetly Interesting For Paranormale Activity. We Live In Esquire Estates Here In Vernal, Utah.
