  I was born on Kodiak and raised in Belles Flats. Nothing was better than growing up wild, swimming in the Fire Hall Lake in the summer, and sledding down the hill on Chiniak Drive in the winter. However, I always remember the feeling you were never alone. Even in the middle of the woods or by the river I always felt watched. Most of what I remember were feelings and stuff I cannot even explain. When I shared it with adults, of course it was written off
    as a child's imagination. Fact is that children are just more open to such things.

I feel the whole island is ancient, and as such has been a burial
ground for all kinds of people since the dawn of time. I mean people can still go hiking and find ancient remains. All I know is something was watching out for this crazy little kid that had no clue how to swim, but was never supervised and fell in the river more time than she can count and did not drown.

I wandered Belles Flats alone and never ran into a bear or violent dog. What is really haunting is after you move away. Even twenty years after moving you
