This one mans behavior could explain a lot. He was an judge ,an entrepreneur, rancher ,farmer, held various other small government titles BUT he also was a, by all accounts, a manager of badgirls!
He held LARGE scale establishments that lasted 10 months out of the year .
During the time owning what is now Escondido and just before he owned it there were disease and Mother Nature in full force.
1832 there was a malaria outbreak.
three year drought which harmed his empire, he had workers in the 1000s.|
1862 small pox epidemic.
1863 a 2 year drought.
1877 an attack on Indian
that held water.|
Many Indians died and were not buried with their people.
And of course the Mexican-American war had a lot of death.
Please read the story about Oliver Whitherby, it's a good read. Thank you for the info about the prior name of Escondido, it was my starting point.
Other accounts of this Oliver are very clean and portray him as a pillar of the community, that's why its was hard to find out why all the hauntings and this comes off
