I lived at the Whispering Pines Apartments on S. Hale and 11th a few years ago. My daughter and I walked around the complex late one night when we saw a silver-haired woman in gray clothing who appeared to be gliding from the fence to one of the storages in the RV parking area.
So scared we walked back inside by the pool and we saw the same figure standing by the mail room door just seconds later. We weren't sure who it was; couldn't see the face very well but we were freaking out.
This complex used to house elderly folks.|

I've learned from librarians at the Escondido public library that it's haunted by the ghost of a Mexican gentleman from the 1700s to 1800s. He was dressed in elaborate vaquero clothing of the period including his fancy sombrero. During a renovation to the library some years ago a worker came face to face with the ghost after turning down one of the aisles. They looked at each other for a moment, then the spirit vanished. Since then employees have reportedly seen books knocked off shelves and have felt a strange presence in the building while working there after hours alone.
The city of Escondido was once the site of a large land grant and ranchero called Rancho Del Diablo. Could the library be built on or near this dapper gent's home? Could he be the former land owner? Outside of the librarians no one else seems to know of this legend, so you won't find it in any book. Come by and check it out for yourself. The employees there are very friendly and helpful and most likely know more than I do about the story. Happy hunting!.
