The Spanish missions were established in the middle of native villages and territories, with the Indians being forced from their homes, lifestyles, and heritages. Many were beaten, and used as slave labor in area mining camps, and thousands died from disease. The gold rush also was a dangerous time for everyone seeking their fortune, and the bay area has lots of paranormal reports connected to this time. Mission san Jose has a small cemetery on grounds,
with many unmarked graves, and other cemeteries on the surrounding grounds with the graves of former priests, soldiers, frontiersman, and also nuns (from
the nearby convent).
Often during construction and city development, graves and artifacts of the ohlone Indians and other local tribes are found, even today. Submitted by Shawn
