I just want to say that what I am about to write is in no way made up. The events, especially the second one, are as I remember them. I have a theory regarding the second event, which I will mention when I'm done.
In the early 1980s my parents, older brother, and I lived in a house on Meadowlark Lane, a cul-de-sac. It's the peach colored house directly across from the apartments and has a little brown picket fence in front and two cypress trees. I was really young back then, under five years old, but I remember several events that have stuck with me after all of these years. The first being a Polaroid photo of my mom standing in our kitchen facing the sink while a wispy, white figure of a woman with long stringy hair stood right behind her. The lower half of the woman faded into nothing, but her hair and one of her arms and hands were pretty clear. My mom hated that photo and forbid my brother and me from showing it to anyone. There was talk of the ghostly woman possibly being my troubled great aunt who had passed away. At some point over the years my brother stole the photo away from my mom because she mentioned wanting to tear it up and throw it away. He doesn't know what happened to it after he acquired it, but he believes his very religious wife secretly destroyed the photo.
A second incident left me terrified of the dark and caused me to sleep with a lamp turned on next to my bed well into my teen years. My mom dropped me off at a neighbor's home across the street in the apartment building because she and my step-dad were going out for the evening. My mom wore dressy white pants with a burgundy sweater that night. Her friend's name (or nickname perhaps) was Panda, and she had a little girl around the same age as me. When we arrived, Panda and a female friend of hers who was visiting were talking to two police officers in the living room about how strange shadows would appear at night and how Panda, the friend, and daughter were becoming really scared. She took them to her daughter's bedroom in the back to show them where most of the incidents had been occurring.
I remember the conversation clearly to this day, and how the officer told her it was only neighborhood kids playing pranks, shining flashlights and creating shadows from outside her window. She opened the curtain and showed the officers that there were no trees nearby for them to climb, as the apartment was on the second floor. I remember the officers shrugging it off as a mere prank then leaving. Later that night, the mom's friend slept with me in the little girl's room, while the girl and Panda slept in the master bedroom. The little girl would no longer sleep in her own bedroom because she was too scared. The daughter's room had two twin beds, and I slept in the one nearest to the door. The door stood at the foot of my bed, and the closet stood at the foot of the other bed. In the middle of the night I awoke to see a white, rounded, smoky cloud that was constantly shifting and moving within itself in the air between our two beds. I stared at it for a few minutes, frightened. I glanced at the door and was about to make a run for it but saw a figure standing in the doorway, watching me. The figure was dressed exactly as my mom had been earlier in the evening, and raised its arms to me. I called out, ''Mom?'' But got no response. I couldn't see flesh --- only darkness where her head and hands should be. I also caught a whiff of the same perfume my mom wore that night as well (White Shoulders, by the way).
I got a bad feeling about the figure and terrified. I called out to the friend which woke her up. She told me to just get in bed with her and go back to sleep. I leaped into her bed and huddled between her and the wall. She never fully woke up, and even though I began crying she just kept telling me to go back to sleep and how it was just my imagination. She seemed really groggy, like she couldn't fully wake up or something. I couldn't get her to wake up fully for some reason. Watching the activity in the room, the white cloud of smoke kept shifting and growing a little larger. I glanced at the foot of the bed and saw one of the sliding doors slowly open and close. It opened once more, and a gnarled hand emerged with one finger curling, beckoning for me to come. I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye and saw human and demonic looking faces coming out of the wall. I then saw two large horns emerge at the foot of the bed, and the covers begin moving as if something like an arm was slowly climbing up underneath to me. That was it! I screamed bloody murder, and Panda raced into the room, turning on the light.
After she calmed me down she took me into her bedroom, and I slept between her and her daughter. I was wide awake and began noticing a line forming on the white sheet coming from Panda's head. It looked like a dark liquid was oozing from her head. I also saw a greenish glow forming in the corners of the room, and every few minutes a bit of green would shoot from the corner and into the vacuum. My crying woke Panda and her daughter up, so she went to call and see if my mom was home yet and if she could come and get me. While gone, the daughter and I sat on the bed, and I tried to articulate what my young mind had been seeing. The daughter just stared at me, becoming scared and saying my face looked weird. We both began crying and Panda took us into the living room to wait for my mom. I don't know why Panda didn't turn on any lights, and we sat there in the dark, all vocally acknowledging and watching numerous shadows shifting all over the room. I was relieved they could see them too.
