I grew up in Montclair, CA. I lived there in the 80s and 90s. I lived on a violent street filled with gang violence and drugs. Besides the negative things happening on our street or the two deaths I witnessed, I've got to admit that the scariest part was living in the haunted apartment we resided in for 15 years. This all happened on a street named Pradera near the corner of Mills and Kingsley. There were shadows. I have also experienced the feeling of being watched and worse followed down the long scary hallway were the norm.
However, the scariest thing in this particular apartment was the man who laughed wickedly. I heard the man laughing several times. On one of the worse nights he laughed at me while I prayed before bed for our family was very religious, and I was not allowed to go to bed before thanking God for all that he had given us. Unfortunately, this night I had been telling ghost stories with my uncle who was staying in our living room. Before going to bed I said to my uncle ''dream with the little devils for dream with the little angels'', a common saying in Spanish. I instantly regretted saying that as I was making my way down the long black hall way I ran in to bed and instantly started praying to God.
That was the first time I heard that indistinct able laughter. I nearly crawled out of my skin with fear, and it took me ages to grow the courage to run down the hall to my uncle and tell him about the laugh at my window. When I finally made it back to the living room, and believe me it took much courage, I told my uncle everything that had happened. He was already scared due to the ghost story telling. He thought I was back to scare him some more. He realized I wasn't kidding because I was nearly in tears, and I was shaking nervously.
My uncle slept on a couch near a large window, and suddenly we both heard the sound of long nails clinking on the glass. I screamed and picked up my feet with horror, and my uncle who thought someone outside was messing with us looked out the window immediately only to find that no one was there. That was impossible for they would have had no time to run. Eventually we were both so tired we decided that we would sleep on my bed, and no this was not perverted in any way. In any case he hugged my feet, and I hugged his. For some reason we both thought the Devil would come and pull our feet, so we agreed on this. Right when I was starting to fall asleep the wicked laugh that gave you the chill down your spine came again. It was an unforgettable laughter.
A few months later my sister and her husband were down on their luck, and they came to stay at our apartment for a few months. My uncle was gone. He had gone to live with roommate, and I gave my sister my bedroom and took over the couch in the living room. One night I heard the indistinct able knock that only the police can make. I opened the front door to find flash lights in my face. ''Is anybody here? Did anybody break in?'' ''No,'' I said frightened. Suddenly I saw my sister standing outside with the next door neighbor, and she was crying. ''What happened?'' I asked terrified. ''A man broke in. I heard him in the house. '' She cried, ''and he was laughing?'' I asked her. ''Yes,'' she cried. ''How did you know?'' she asked. ''It's a ghost.'' I announced. At that moment the police came out of the rooms and said they found no one.
