Comment by Maggie: I grew up just north of you on Ramona Avenue during the 80s and 90s. I'm very familiar with the apartments of Pradera and Canoga. To this day that area creeps me out at night and now I know why. How terrifying!!.

The house (now torn down) on Vernon Avenue near Holt Boulevard in Montclair holds a distinct memory for me. Besides the many things people (usually guests) saw and heard, none compared to the event that occurred just a couple of months before we finally moved out of the house and became the second-to-last family to ever live in that dwelling.
One summer day as the sun slowly set over the adjacent rental-car lot my mom, her ex-husband, my brother and I rushed to pack our things to visit my grandmother in Mexico. As usual, I was the slowest to get ready, and my mother commanded for me to make sure all the lights were out. The sun had not yet set, and the diminishing evening light was still warm and visible. Without much thought and somehow resentful of my menial task, I ran from room to room making sure all light switches were off. In my haste I tripped on a kink in the hallway carpet. I swiftly avoided a fall, but as I turned in a fluster toward the first room in front of which I tripped, I saw what I thought could only be my brother standing at the threshold covering his mouth to muffle a mocking little laugh. I recovered in a second. As I continued on my way toward the front door, I chided him to shut up and hurry out, reminding him to close the door behind him.
