door behind him. (Who was the more confused?)
My mother held me as I finally was able to cry out and breathe. She whispered that it would be okay. In the car she sat in the middle seat and listened with a widened look to what I had experienced. She acknowledged my words. She said she believed me, but she made me promise never tell anyone what I had seen. That moment marked me. I talked to her about it more, and then I learned more things that I
could never have imagined.|

This is the first time I have publicly published this experience, or the others that would follow.
We moved into a home on Vernon Avenue in Montclair (the house is no longer standing) at around the end of 1997. My mom and her now ex-husband rented the large house from the owner, who lived next door on the corner of Holt and Vernon (he and his wife have now passed away. ) My brother and I were soon to go to a new middle school the following year. The very first night we moved in we began to unpack all our boxes. It was around 10 pm. In the commotion and bustling excitement of moving into a new house, we suddenly heard the sound of loud footsteps rising over our own sounds -- the distinct thunder of someone running over the ceiling the entire length of the house.
We all immediately froze, and with a mixture of confusion and terror. The sound stopped at the north end of the house. At first we tried to make sense out of it. It could be a large cat, a possum, a huge bird, an intruder. Wild-eyed and alarmed, my mom and her ex-husband contemplate in whispers calling the police. Time passed, and we remained in bewildered silence - five, ten, fifteen minutes, and then an hour? My step-father gave out a forced manly shout in order to scare away any intruder. All the lights were already on. Another indeterminate amount of interminable seconds passed, and we almost became calm. The cricket's chirps lulled us back into a sense of security, and just like that, breaking the silence, the heavy footsteps now ran loudly to the opposite side of the house -- the entire length of the ceiling. As if to mock us, or, even, to welcome us: ''here I am. '' Or, ''here we are. ''
