I worked at the San Diego superior court for 10 years. For most of those years I worked in room 4001. It was normally a fairly noisy place but late in the afternoon it would quiet down as our customers left.
There is a waiting area in the room for customers that is separated from the work space by some movable cubicle-type partitions. When the office is quiet quite often we would hear the noise of papers being rustled in the waiting room.
It sounded like someone reading a newspaper. We would walk around the partition to the waiting room and there would be nobody there. This phenomenon was noted by virtually every staff member and many of the interns that worked in our office.|
We never found an explanation. There is a wall of windows in the front of the room where the waiting room is and there are vertical blinds that have the potential to make noise if disturbed but they were always motionless when we checked the waiting room after hearing the noise.
We would always joke that the room was haunted. The building was built in the early 1960's but the portion of the building where room 4001 is located is in the footprint of the old courthouse which was built in the 1800's.
The old building was demolished when the new building was built.
