Central or ''Memorial'' Park in Ventura City: this was actually a Civil War era graveyard. When the city incorporated ( or perhaps later? ) they were told this graveyard was too close to the river. The rotting bodies could contaminate the water table.
It could no longer be used, and had to be moved. The only trouble was, everyone buried there was interred with a pine box, and the ground was very wet from the near by river. There wasn't anything left to move! The town did the next best thing.
They moved the headstones and grave markers, and left the rotted remains in place. Only on thing was left - the memorial marker or statue. It was one of the inspirations for ''poltergeist'', the movie.|
This is the main source of the hauntings in the Victorian/downtown area. You can visit it any time, but you can see things moving very late at night when it's quiet and foggy.
