Tenmile, Oregon Ghost Tales | |

When I was a kid, 10 or 11, I was in the Cub Scouts. One day we had a meeting at another members house who lived near the Tenmile Elementary School. A friend (I cannot remember who) and I had ridden our bikes to the meeting that day. After the meeting we were riding back to my house. The Tenmile Cemetery was not far from the meeting and was just off the road on the way to my house. All of a sudden my friend slammed on his brakes. Of course, I slammed on my brakes as well, but I had no idea why we were stopping. I asked him what was up, and he pointed toward a solitary tree on a small hill inside the cemetery. I looked where he pointed and saw what seemed to be a woman in a a white gown standing by the tree. I seem to remember it looked as if she had her hand upon the tree as if she were leaning against it to rest or catch her breath. We sat there on our bikes staring at the figure for the longest time talking quietly trying to reason what it was we were seeing. Was it a person? We decided that it wasn't a person because it was too still,

and a person would have been clearly visible as we were only about 50 yards from the tree. This thing was fuzzy and indistinct. So we started to suspect that it was a trick of the light somehow. It was dusk and I thought that the setting sun was somehow reflecting off something near the tree. There were two problems with this theory that I didn't see

or think of at the time. One was that the sun had already gone behind the hill opposite the cemetery. The other problem was that the reflection of the sun off of an object is going to gradually change as the sun goes down. This thing did not move or change for a full minute. Regardless of this, or rather, being ten I did not think of these things and expressed this theory to my friend. He started to agree with me when the figure began moving away from the tree. It moved a couple of yards from the tree before just vanishing. We took off so fast I think that was actually left rubber. We pedelled hard until we were quite a distance from the cemetery.
