I lived in a house in Sudden Valley for about six months when I first came to live in Bellingham. Sudden Valley has its own mystique with so many huge trees and houses built to be a part of the woods. Some houses, like the one I was renting, are built over cliffs on stilts. Because of the way the house was built, (it was built in the mid-1970s according to Whatcom County land parcel info on the internet). I often tried to ignore the creaks and moans of the house as the weather changed or the wood stove heated up the house. However, the first few weeks of living in the house told me that there was something other than the house creaking in a normal fashion.
I started hearing a breathy type voice in the master bedroom, and only in the master. I searched and searched for a reason for this sound. While I'm a believer in spirits and other paranormal occurrences, I am also very logical and believe that many things considered as evidence of a haunting can easily be explained by natural/normal phenomena. As much as I tried, I was never able to pinpoint the noise. What's more, the breathy voice sometimes would be right in my ear, and other times it would seem to be coming from across the bedroom. The noise would occur at any time of the day or night, but it would only be in the master bedroom. In addition to normal creaking and the weird breathy voice in the bedroom, there were also clearly footsteps that would pace the main hallway of the house. After even a few weeks, it was quite easy to tell the difference between the footsteps and the house doing its normal creaking/settling business.
Finally, one night, my husband heard the breathy voice. It's not like he didn't believe me before, but now he KNEW exactly what it sounded like, and he agreed with my ''spirit'' assessment. Both of us continued to hear this voice on and off, until one day I was sick of hearing it. I told the entity that I could hear it but couldn't understand it and if they would please stop, that would be great. Neither one of us heard the breathy voice for several weeks after that. Then, all of a sudden the noise came back with a vengeance, as now it was a daily occurrence and multiple times per day, not just a few times per week as was happening before. At this point my step-son also started to report that when he closed his eyes in his room, he could ''see'' a shadow moving across his eyes, like someone was walking back and forth in front of him. (He slept with the lights on at this house, and I have no reason to disbelieve him. Also, we never mentioned the ghost or spirit word when he was around. I didn't want him to freak out!)
One night, after the breathy voice came back, I went to use the en-suite bathroom, and this black mass came up from the floor and blocked my path to the toilet. The mass blacked out the window that was behind it and also the toilet and wall. I could not see through it. I happened to be feeling very ill that night and told the mass to go away as I was sick. For some reason, I wasn't scared at all when I saw the mass, even though I was fairly certain it was the entity in my house trying to show itself to me. After the night I dismissed the mass, I didn't hear the breathy voice again until the week before we moved out of the house. I never saw another black mass either. I couldn't find any information about the house, but I'm certain there was something else there other than me and my family.

I have a story which occurred about a year ago in the Bayview Cemetery. I went there with the sole intention of finding the grave of a long passed relative who I had come to ''know'' by transcribing all of his letters. He died young, at thirty-nine, leaving a lot of unfinished business in his life. He had always been near fortune, but not apparently close enough to become a success on his own. He died in debt, and his wife continued his line of work as a railway telegrapher.
