The spookiest road in Renton, Washington would have to be the quarter mile stretch of Hardie Avenue that runs behind the Fred Meyer Store that is on Sunset and Rainier Avenues. By the light of day all appears normal as traffic bustles to and fro, but there is more than meets the eye. From Sunset Avenue south to train bridge the east side is the blank and indifferent walls of the backside of the Fred Meyer's. The west side is a dirt faced cliff some 50 feet or so high. This causes almost an eerie Claustrophobic Canyon Effect, more noticeable at night and when alone and on foot.

The dirt cliffs are a tell tale of when the road you are now traveling was actually where the Black River flowed out of Lake Washington more than a century ago. When the Ballard Locks were installed, this disrupted its flow, and the river ceased to exist in Renton. Things were so much different as this exact area was the location of mighty long houses of Duwamish Tribe's villages. Cedar dug out canoes would ply this waterway and salmon would be harvested.

When the apartment complex just south of the cliffs was built many artifacts of these ancient peoples were disturbed and only given a brief study. This lack of respect of the past perhaps did not sit well with the spirits. Removing an entire river may have also displaced the water spirits that dwelled there. As if it is just a hint of what was here in the past, there is a totem pole at the north entrance of the Fred Meyer's store. Could this be a protective talisman against unhappy spirits?

To the south the train bridge which a few years ago was rebuilt to a concrete structure acts gate to protect us or maybe keep in the restless spirits that habit this area. There has been some very peculiar graffiti on this bridge. As you drive by in your car, you may see what appears under the east end of the bridge to be a homeless man who loiters there. Or is it? Is this the incarnate of a spirit or just a man? Do you have the courage to speak to him to find out for yourself?

Sometimes the spookiest places are the ones that seem to be just the normal urban environment by day; however, at night it can a completely different matter.
