Northford is home to the lady in black. The spirit of a woman who legend has it perished in a fire in a button factory in the 1700s. In 1969 a restaurant was built on the site of the old button factory. She always appeared dressed in black and with a veil concealing her face. Could it be that she was self-conscious of her burnt face? Over the years the building has passed through many hands until it was vacant for a time. The first I heard of the lady in black was

through an acquaintance who lived in a large house directly across the street from the restaurant. One day I asked her if she had ever seen a ghost, and

she replied ''oh, yes. I've seen a woman in a black dress with a veil over her face on my front lawn many times in broad daylight''. I asked her how she knew she was a ghost. She said ''because she just vanishes''.
Years later my nephew got a job at the restaurant, and he told me that it was haunted by a spirit they called ''the Lady in Black. '' Instantly I remembered what my friend had told me about the woman on her front lawn! Being a paranormal
