I was staying on Peaks Island at a relative's house, and I borrowed a kayak. I was coming ashore onto a little island called Ram, standing knee deep in water, and I dropped my paddle. It started going quickly away from me. Being pulled by the wave, I thought it would go out to sea, and I would be totally stranded. It turned out a young woman was there, swimming in the little cove. She swam over and pushed it back to me, telling me to be very careful. She

said that it was dangerous out there alone (except, SHE seemed to be alone!), and reminded me that the rising tide might take away the kayak from the
|
beach. She pointed over my head and said that the weather was changing and that perhaps I should not go ashore.
I looked behind me to the beach to see if it was worth dragging the kayak up there, and to see what she seemed to be seeing about the weather. Then I looked back again to talk to her, but all I could see was a piece of driftwood with seaweed clumped around it. I know the driftwood did not push my paddle back to me or talk to me, but
