My family lived across the street from the town hall/police station mid to late 1960's. It was a large house that was turned into a duplex. The chief of police and family lived on one side and my family on the other.
There were several small events but I will speak of 2 major events. One night I woke to noise downstairs. I called for my mother a few seconds later I hear footsteps on the stairs. Thump thump thump pause.

walk past my bed to a cove window and lift and antique sewing machine 3 times slowly thump thump thump.
The second time was very close to Christmas. The house was old so in order for heat to spread through the house holes were cut between floors into the floor and slats of wood were put into place to stop people from falling through.
One night I heard noise in the living room the bedroom I was in was directly above. I looked through the hole
