I grew up in Depew and was very interested in the local history when I was younger and did a great deal of independent research on the subject. It turns out that Chauncey Depew and many of his associates that started the town were members of the order of the Golden Dawn, an occult society that was popular at that time. Rumor has it that the land that Depew resides on was considered cursed by the local Indians who were convinced that the land itself was evil and would consume anyone that tried to settle there. Depew and his compatriots thought that they could harness the power of the land through rituals and could use it to empower themselves and built a tower on the railroad land north of fireman's Park for that purpose.
Whatever they were doing there in the tower caused an explosion and Depew and his partners declared bankruptcy on the town and fled in short order. Ever since then the town has been plagued with mysterious disappearances and madness.
My father worked for the Erie County Sherriff's dept for years and he said that there was an unusually high number of disappearances and runaways for the area. I have always felt that the village was tainted in some way and moved immediately after college. I don't know how much of what I dug up is true but the story is absolutely eerie!. Submitted by Sarah
Comment by Nathan: I would really like to know how you found out that Chauncey Depew was a member of the order of the Golden Dawn, thanks.
