A couple of years back some friends and I would go on late night cruises, often to supposed ''scary'' places, but sometimes just to places we thought were ''cool'' like Chicquees Rock or the Potato Patch.
This one was one of the latter. We went to look out point on the Appalachian Trail (just south of the 501 Shelter.) We were hanging out and heard a scream off in the distance. No idea where it came from because of echoes bouncing around, so we stopped and listened. We heard it several more times with a minute or two pause in between. One of us yelled back, and the scream seemed to reply. Many ideas passed between us of what we thought it could be. They could be another group of idiots like us, or someone could be actually hurt and screaming for help, or someone was lost.
After a while of us return yelling, the scream location changed. It sounded closer and less like an echo. We could determine the sound wasn't a word, nor did it sound human. At this point we thought it was some kind of bird in distress, or one suggested wildly a ''pterodactyl!'' (Sounds crazy to say, but you should have heard this god awful screech!) After what seemed like at least an hour, the wailing sound was a short walk away from us. We had long since stopped yelling back, (out of sheer terror) but curiosity had us staying.
Now you could hear what sounded like loud bass filled stomps, as if this creature was of immense proportion. The flashlights flicked off, and the last you saw of each other were the Garfield sized eyes filled with utter fear, realizing that we should have run long ago! Next, you could hear the smaller rocks vibrating and falling with the stomps and the blood curdling howl. When you could feel the ground shake with the footsteps, we simultaneously knew without a word... RUN!!!
We all darted up the trail in the dark to one last screaming howl, each step uneasy from the enormous thud of whatever this creature was. The cars started and squealed tires even as some were still getting in. The terror turned to a half insane sounding laughter as we felt that we just escaped death from some prehistoric or supernatural beast...
