I live in a wonderful old row house not far from Logan Circle. Actually, it's 130 years old this year. Of course, over that length of time there were bound to be some deaths. Several years ago I embarked on a paint-stripping project to remove the old paint from the woodwork in my upstairs and downstairs hallways. I looked for my special sander that I had for cleaning intricate woodwork; however, it was nowhere to be found. I searched everywhere with no

luck. In any case I completed the massive paint stripping job.
Several months later I went down to my basement to get some tool or other. When

I reached the bottom of the staircase I saw standing in the middle of the basement floor all my paint cans arranged in a 6-foot-high pyramid. Sitting on the top can was the missing sander! Did I feel a chill? You bet, but at the same time I was happy to get the sander back. I calmed myself and said aloud, ''thank you for finding the sander, but the next time could you help with some of the work?'' Immediately, the atmosphere relaxed, and I felt that
