In 1987 some friends and I were driving around one summer night up to Sugarloaf mountain. Then we made our way to Harper's Ferry and eventually up to Shepardstown Pike to the Antietam Cemetery next to the Antietam Battlefield. We didn't see much there that night, but I drove along the spooky Porter Town Road through the woods then through woods and over across the Appalachian Trail. We eventually ended up on Gapland Road where Mountain Church Road

intersects it. My friend saw a sign for Burkittsville and told me to stop. (This was back in the late 80s long prior the Blair Witch movie.)

was just another little town out here. He told me to just sit in the road in neutral and turn off the car and the headlights. We sat there for maybe twenty minutes, and nothing happened. We were just chatting and listening to the radio. A couple of cars passed us, but everything was quiet.
