On Brookeville road in Chevy chase Maryland there is a row of handsome old stores that is the destination of children as they leave school seeking afternoon sweets to fuel their youthful adventures. As the kids run up and down the block the cry ''wait for me'' is often heard but at times one ''wait for me'' is different from all the rest.
Sometimes ''wait for me'' sends a chill down the backs of all who hear it. No matter how warm the summer day an intense cold breeze drifts past after this ''wait for me'' is heard. On July 11 1864 Confederate cavalry led by brigadier general John mccausland rode up and down that stretch of Brookeville road probing Union defenses in preparation for a large scale attack on Washington dc.

At first the Union was caught by surprise as the Confederate cavalry looted stores in downtown Bethesda and created mayhem across the Union front. By the next day capable Union cannoneers had rushed to fort derussy (located in what is now Rock Creek park) and rained fire down on the Confederate cavalry.

As the cavalry retreated up Brookeville road among the casualties was a young soldier of 14 years who bravely accompanied his older brother into war. A sharp piece of cannon shrapnel found him and as he fell from his horse he cried ''please don't leave me wait for me! '' in the heat of battle his brother and the other cavalry men did not hear his plea.
His plea will continue until answered. There is a lesson to be learned here. Look after your younger brother. He admires you and will always rely on you to answer his calls for help.
