Near Ahoskie NC there is a little bleak grey-washed cinderblock building. It is a hunting club now complete with dog kennels and a shooting range but years ago during my grandfather's time it used to be a slaughterhouse.
A hog slaughterhouse. The story as it was told to me by generations of family is that a young man was brutally killed there. His name has been forgotten but he was the son of my grandfather's friend.
He was only nineteen when he died. The young man and his friend were working at the slaughter to help support their families as all good sons did in the time. 0ne entered the room where the hogs were kept banging a pot with a stick and yelling to frighten them into the next room where the other stood waiting with a club to knock the hogs out (called a 'knocker').

After that they would slit the unconscious hogs' throats. The young man my grandfather's friend's son happened to be the knocker. There was a wooden sliding panel in place in the doorway that made it so only two hogs could enter the room at a time but this day apparently it had been removed and the teenagers didn't think it a problem.

As the youth began making noise the hogs began to swarm almost as one. They rushed the door stumbling and bumping into each other and the knocker didn't have time to realize what was happening. The massive hogs ran directly into him throwing him down.
He was trampled and gored under the feet of sixty-some 270-350 pound hogs. When the hogs cleared and the friend could reach him the young man was very clearly dead. My grandfather's 200 acres of land rest not a half-mile from the slaughterhouse.
0n several occasions when I have been hunting or exploring down by the swamps I have heard hogs running through those woods though no hogs live in the area and wild hogs haven't been spotted in almost two decades.
