In the early 1950s I lived in a farm house about half a mile from the train depot. In the kitchen there was a trap door in the floor. The trap door led to a room under the kitchen. In one corner of the room was a cell with iron bars. Inside the cell were hand restraints attached to chains secured against the cell wall. The chains and restraints were rusted and old. At night you could hear noises coming from under the floor. All of the children there were

In 1954 I was a 10 year old poor boy living in a farm house on a tobacco farm about 1 / 2 mile from the old train station. I was one of 6 children living there. My mother was alone because my father had left us.
My brother and I were looking for oranges along the railroad track that had been discarded b the grocery store that stood on the hill across the tracks from the station. Under one orange I found a five dollar bill.
I was so excited that I started running down the road towards the house on the way I encountered an old man walking with a cane. I shouted at him that I had found some money he smiled and told me to hurry home and give it to my mother.
