There have been several Bigfoot sightings in Yancey County. In 1988 a few friends drove to the top of Mount Mitchell in the snow in a four-wheel drive. As they were coming back down their headlights illuminated a snow bank in which were deep tracks leading up the embankment into the woods. Since it was dark they decided to come back during the day to examine them. They measured the snow depth at 18 inches, and the tracks went all the way to the bottom. They saw toe marks but since there were no claw marks they figured that it couldn't be a bear.

They concluded the tracks must have been made by a bipedal creature. The tallest of the men was six two. He climbed the incline in eight strides. Whatever left the footprints had done this in two steps! Above the slope the creature had crossed a tree limb three feet above the ground without altering its stride. The men calculated the footprints to be fourteen inches long and seven inches wide!.

Comment by Kay: This came from a book that had paranormal sightings from all the counties in NC. I can't remember the name and the author, and apparently he didn't have any photos to submit.
