Up the hill from Memory Lane and the ruins of Germanton High School there used to be a very large two-story wood framed Victorian style farm house called the Riddle House. My mother's family, the Plummers lived there back in the 1940s. Dishes could be heard breaking in the night with no mess to be found. Dragging chains were heard. We also saw darting shadows and heard moans under the bed. There were fresh footprints in the snow that suddenly just ended

in the middle of the yard. There was a headless ghost bumps in the night.
Lord, the stories I heard about that place as a boy. In the 1960s Riddle

descendants hired my uncle Frank to remodel the interior to the tune of about $50k, which was a lot of money back then. Though apprehensive about the job after having lived there as a boy, he hired a crew from Winston-Salem, none of which would know the history of the place and went to work.
After about three weeks the job was done, and much to my uncle's relief there had been no incidents of any kind. The family moved in. About a week later the
