Does anyone know anything about the history of the property on 17XX Downing Street? It was said there was once a cattle pasture there and a lake was filled in, but there must be something else to the property there before the neighborhood was being built in the early 1960s. Any information would be appreciated.

Elm Street has a lot of ghost reports running from Saint Pius Church all the way downtown to Natty Green's. I have no first hand experiences with them, but I have heard many. It appears at the turn of the 20th century the area around Saint Pius was once a garbage dump before the church was there and was a rather rough area with a lot of emotional energy in the area from people sensitive enough to pick it up. Considering the age of Elm Street running through the town, it would make sense earthbound spirits are there --- a lot of history and untold stories.

I am familiar with woods between Downing Street and the Westminister Cemetery. Even back in the early 1970s when us boys were playing back in those woods we were aware of a history of the woods of a family that left not only a few graves back in the woods and a spring house near the creek there, which was near a deep swirling area of water that was known by us kids as 'haunted pools.' How the name haunted pools got started I don't know, but apparently the name arrived from some experience some boys had camping out there in the 1950s. They said something like Willow the Wisp was seen back there. In the period from about 1972 to 1980 a lot of us kids played in those woods and the fields in the cemetery beyond. Nothing ever seemed to follow me home, but I can tell you the woods had a reputation for being a bit weird at night, especial during summer nights when odd lights would appear.
