Comment by Jim: Eliterepeat. files. wordpress. com/2014/04/seeing-things. Jpg? W=584&h=762 came across this old Victorian illustration to a children's book with a poem by Eugene field. Appears field wrote this poem before WW1 and knew a thing or two about being a kid bothered by poltergeist.
Comment by anonymous: Redfin. com/nc/greensboro/ 1723-downing-st-27410/home/94625053 this is how the house looks today. The house to the right did not exist in those days but was a field. Behind the house once was a thick woods of about a half mile before opening to the graveyard.
Nobody has ever contacted me or inquired about the house. I have not been inside the house since 1984.

Comment by Jim: I visited the old neighborhood last week. I wonder if any of the neighbors living on Tennyson have had weird experiences. My hunch is my playing with friends at the graveyard I picked something up that followed me home.
The other possibility is there was something about the property of 1723 where the house was built that we did not know about. When I went to the end of Tennyson where the old woods was I was surprised how much the terrain has shifted.
There used to be an old spring house of rock in the woods by the creek which my friends and I pretended was an old British fort and we would play games as being Indians or Redcoats. The trails through the woods are all gone now and maybe time and the large removal of the woods has closed this chapter.
Anyone who wants to investigate this haunting I think might turn up something-I am almost positive this area must have had a history as I cannot think of any reason for the poltergeist activity there back in the 1970s.

Comment by Jim: This leads me now to think that since our house was new and built in 1965, and the haunting of our ranch style house at the end of Downing Street was happening just 2 years after my folks moved in. The issue must have been the property as nobody lived in our house before us. I would welcome any ideas and speculations on what might explain a new house becoming so intensely haunted.
Comment by Jim: Interesting update. As a son it always amazes me after you have heard your parents tell the same story for the 100th time, and every once in a while your parents surprise you. So it was yesterday when my mother revealed that in the 1967 to 1970 time period when I was just a little boy that she had her first ghostly encounter in the kitchen at 172x Downing Street in Greensboro. She said I was very young, and this was several years before I and my sister experienced the poltergeist effects in this house.
She related that around two in the afternoon she was looking out the kitchen window to the house next door when she felt a presence coming up behind her that sent shivers up her spine. She did not see anything, but she stated there was a feeling of danger and weirdness that was very intense, and then just as suddenly it was gone. If this is the case, this raises the question if the house was haunted before the poltergeist.
Comment by anonymous: The backyard once backed into the forest. You had to walk through about 400 yards of forest before it opened up to Westminister Cemetery. Interesting enough the stream with steep banks that ran through the forest and fed the old spring house was called 'Haunted Pools'' even before I experienced anything in this house.
