seen a single car in a little over an hour. This didn't seem right to me, especially since Hickory is a city and has more traffic at night than a small town. As I was thinking about all of this, my panic got worse. Finally, Jordan stood up and told me to walk with him, and he added ''stay close. '' The whole entire rest of the walk with him, I began wondering why he said this to me. I asked him ''what was wrong?'' But he remained quiet. Then it happened.

We heard a car on the next road over, so we both took off in that direction. That led us back to the main road NC 127. Then from there we made our way

back to my grandpa's house. I was very relieved.
Before we went inside, Jordan pulled me to the side and said something that I remember to this day, ''I honestly thought we were trapped in the Hickory Dead Zone, but we weren't. I'm glad we made it back safe and sound. '' I had no idea what he was talking about, so I asked my grandpa early the next morning. He told me that there was a rumor that if you take enough wrong turns in Hickory at night
