My father was a murderer. He spent 30 years in prison for a murder he committed when I was a little kid. As you can imagine this was a defining trauma of my childhood. They let him out when I was a grown man and he was an old man.
He had nowhere to go so he came to live with us. Every night he would have nightmares and scream. I thought it was just due to all those years in prison or the guilt of his crime. One day I went into his room during one

of his nightmares and saw a dark figure bent over him as he was screaming.
I flipped the light switch and the figure disappeared. I asked my dad about

it and he said this dark figure showed up on his first night out of prison. As far as I know it stayed with him for as long as he lived which was not very long.
He died four years after his release.
