When I was eight years old my class took a field trip to the battlefield. When we left the museum area the path to get to the tour went through a strip of trees. As soon as we hit the tree line, my stomach dropped. I felt like I was going to be absolutely sick. I smelled this smoky odor that I can only equate to Gunpowder. I looked at my friends, and they all looked like they were terrified and sick. I asked if they smelled it too, and they all nodded.

We ran as fast as we could to the teacher, but by the time we reached her we had cleared the trees and felt completely fine, and the smell had vanished.

The teacher just laughed and said something about us being silly.

When we were small and stayed at our grandfather's farm in Cowpens, our grandmother would tell us to stay away from the windows, because of what she called 'the Boogey. ' Curiosity got the better of my sister and I. We peeked and saw a silhouette of a man standing near the tree at the driveway. Back then, I didn't know about our farm's history in Cowpens. I wonder now if it was a Rev. Soldier or militia man we saw. We were too scared after that to question. It was the first time I saw something not of this world. Scared the hell out of me, and yet now I would so like to go back with a voice box and such. Some of those spirits may be family.
