The Martha Washington Inn is most definitely haunted. The most well known ghosts are: Beth, the Civil War era nurse, the rider-less horse in the back garden, and the soldier who was shot on the stairs. However, there are dozens more inhabiting this place and perhaps hundreds just passing through or associated with the town of Abingdon. You see, Abingdon was very important during the Revolutionary War too, and is where the Overmountain Men gathered

to march to Kings Mountain. These tough hardy local men are the reason the United States exists. So this area was already a hot spot of activity long

before the Civil War, so do not be surprised if you see one of our brave patriot boys wandering around, because one of them actually showed up in a photograph taken at the hotel.
In fact, there is another spirit which was captured in a photograph of the outside of the building, which was taken in the late 1800s. People have been touched, heard voices, and seen full bodied apparitions. Objects are moved regularly. Guests and staff always try to debunk
