I have a friend that lives in a new house out on Old Courthouse Road a mile north of the park boundary. Sometimes you can hear men talking very faintly as if out in the field. There has been the smell of tobacco smoke, and no one has ever smoked in the house. I've witnessed both of these phenomena on several occasions. The strangest happened one day while I was there; we saw a cloud of smoke about three feet off the ground pass from the front yard

to the back. It smelled like a campfire. There wasn't any other smoke to be seen, and neither of their neighbors were home.

It's not technically in Appomattox, but the house Ivanhoe in Rustburg is supposedly full of spirits, including a ''Lavender Lady'' who walks through the house, a phantom wood chopper, and a re-appearing blood stain from a peddler that was murdered in an upstairs bedroom. My family purchased a horse from the house in the early 1990s. The day we unloaded her at our farm all the swings on our swing set started moving by themselves. They were swinging back and forth strongly, and there was absolutely no wind nor anyone around who could have possibly moved them. The swinging went on for a few minutes then stopped on a dime.
We also paid 4 top notch trainers to train the horse we purchased, but none of them could make way with her. The last one we hired said the horse acted like having a rider on her back was too much for her. It was as if there was already someone riding her. I also see there a ton of posts about the Crawford farm on here (also locally known as the Davis or Caldwell farm) but my father told of visiting the old Davis place when it was in disarray back in the 70s.
