The most famous haunted place in Appomattox is the Crawford Farm out near Falling River and Promise Land. Elijah Crawford was a plantation owner (who fought in the Civil War. ) He and his wife had a love like in a Nicholas Sparks novel and became very wealthy after the war, mainly because Elijah had freed all of his slaves years before the war and most had stayed on the farm as workers. Thus when other planters were scrambling for laborers after slavery was abolished, Elijah had a powerful workforce and developed an incredibly successful tobacco and cotton farm.

Eventually, Elijah's wife passed away giving birth to his 2nd child (a deformed boy named Amos) and Elijah began meeting with a former slave from Haiti named Greenie, who know voodoo and dark magic, to try and contact his dead wife, Alice. Six years after Alice Crawford's death, Elijah's daughter, Abigail died with typhoid fever.
|
After this, Elijah shut down the farm. He fired most of his employees and turned his barns into what were known as his ''work houses,'' where he would meet with Greenie and attempt to contact, and eventually to bring his wife and daughter back from the dead. Over the course of Elijah's life nine people went missing or died mysteriously on the farm. Since his death, another twelve disappearance and unexplained deaths have occurred on the Crawford Farm.
When Elijah was 79 years old, he was arrested for the murder of his nurse, Sarah Caldwell. She was found in one of Elijah's work houses strapped to a table. Both of her eyes were sewn shut, and her mouth was full of herbs and salt. Caldwell's actual cause of death was determined to be arsenic poisoning. When the sheriff searched Elijah's house, they found jars of arsenic beneath Elijah's bed. Elijah was missing, and a manhunt was organized to find him.
At this point, Elijah Crawford was wheelchair bound due to a breathing problem and could barely leave the house. Yet somehow he had managed to murder Sarah Caldwell and vanish. He was missing for just over two weeks when a boy from a neighboring farm was coming home from hunting, looked above him and found Elijah Crawford's body hung by a noose. He was dangling nine feet in the air from a massive oak. It was never determined how Elijah got some two miles away from his home to this spot, let alone how he managed to get nine feet in the air to hang himself.
