We rented a home on South Main Street that had 3 sky lights on the roof. It was a 3-story home. We had my niece and her mother (my younger sister) and her father and my older sister with us. I had my daughter and son with me. My son brought a friend along, so we all had someone to hang out with during the week. My son and his friend stayed in the third story bedroom. My daughter and niece shared a room on the second floor, along with my younger sister and her husband on the second floor in the separate master bedroom which just happened to be directly over my head. I slept on a pullout sofa in the first floor family room.
The family room had two separate Dutch doors: one on the wall facing the stairwell directly in front of me going up and the other on the wall to my right facing out toward the kitchen and the downstairs bathroom. My other sister slept on a sofa that was out in the foyer of the room to my left facing Main Street. The home was very old, and the ceiling of my room was the floor of the master bedroom upstairs which at night time if they had the lights on in that room above me I could see the lights shining through the cracks of the floor boards above me.
Outside of the Dutch doors near the stairwell was an old desk with a miniature set of antique bowling pins about 5 inches in height. They were set up in the triangle formation as you would see at the bowling ally and perfectly spaced apart. My younger sister is a smoker, and we endured her breaks as she excused herself to go outside to have a puff. That first night we all went to bed late. As I lay there on my bed looking up at the lights shining through the crack of the floor, I was wondering when they would eventually turn the lights off and retire. Fifteen minutes later the lights turned off, and it was extremely quiet in the house. The way I like it!
I was fading off to sleep. I then heard someone coming down the steps, walk past the stairwell Dutch doors, and proceed down the hallway y toward the bathroom. I assumed it was my sister having a late night nicotine smoke. Ten minutes later I heard the footsteps go by me and back up the steps to the master bedroom above me. The lights turned on through the cracks again, and again it took what seemed to be forever before they turned the lights off again.
Not long after the house was quiet again. I heard someone walking down the steps again, and this time turned on the hallway light. I saw the shadow of someone walk past the Dutch doors which had a curtains that were closed on the doors. They bumped into the old desk, and I heard one of the bowling pins fall to the floor and roll away. The footsteps went past the doorway and back up the steps moments later, and everyone was quiet again.
The following morning I was the first to get up, and I went out to the kitchen to make some coffee. Others started rising and followed suit to get that first cup of java in the morning. When I asked my younger sister why she kept going up and down the steps and turning the lights on the previous night, she looked at me like I was crazy. I explained the noise, footsteps, and someone hitting the old desk and knocking the bowling pin down. She stated that it wasn't her but maybe one of the kids.
