There is a cemetery just outside the town limits of Gordonsville called Woodberry Cemetery where people of color have been buried for over 120 years. This cemetery is in a wooded area and had become overgrown for many years. Several years ago concerned locals cleaned up the cemetery. My husband and I have photographed 30 or so cemeteries for historical and genealogical purposes including this cemetery. In all of our visits to cemeteries I have never

experienced anything like I did at this one.
My husband and I each walked parts of the cemetery and snapped pictures of the tombstones. There is
|
a tall monument at the far end of the cemetery that is close to the road where we exited the cemetery. To save steps I decided to stop and get that photo on our way out. My husband stopped the car and waited as I got out and took the pictures of a monument for a Rev. D. Parker who died in 1900.
After I had snapped a few photos I turned around to go back to the car and was startled to see a black man sitting on a log at the edge of the woods just across
