January 07: THE GHOSTS OF BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE There was no doubt in Laurie Platt's mind that she had several ghostly experiences at Beth Israel.
She started to see things at the Synagogue when she first began to teach Folk Dance there. A few times upon arrival she opened the door and heard voices. When she walked down the stairs into the social hall nobody else was in the Synagogue.
|
Another time while dancing in a circle, she looked up and saw a woman floating in the back closet. The woman was wearing a dress of the 1900s. This aroused her curiosity, so the next day she went to the City Library and found out that before the synagogue was built a house stood on the spot. It belonged to a lady named Betty and her husband. So it was, and still is, Betty that haunts the Synagogue.
|
At other times another dancer and Laurie saw a short man standing on the stairs looking down at the social hall watching them dance. Laurie wouldn't mention his name but said she knew who this person was. His brother also haunts the Synagogue.
In the Ladies bathroom there is one stall that she refused to enter. Once when she was in there, three ladies were there talking, and when she entered, they disappeared. Another dancer felt the same thing about the bathroom as well. On another occasion when they played music and then stopped, they would hear knocks on something to get them to play more music. They seemed to enjoy this. At various times while they were dancing in a circle, a few little'' spirits'' walked through.
