Tumbling Creek was on the Swift Silver tales. There is a field near Cardwell's house named for a man named Flint. I thought it was named for the arrowheads and things in the field. The Moore family lived there in the 1790s. William got it in a land grant for his service in the revolutionary war. He died in 1830s, and his widow sold the place to the Helton family. There are many ghost stories told about the Swift Silver. John Swift killed out his crew before he got the coast of North Carolina, hired a crew and took his silver back to England. He killed a man and stole the silver plates to make coins. The plates were dated 1754. Swifts' wagon can be heard in the area of the old road to little tumbling cove and down the old Helen Henderson highway. There is a map of the place during the 1700s at the historical society in Abingdon. Submitted by anonymous

The Yankee Army was camped down in the field across from the Tumbling Creek Church in the corner as you go up in Aistrop Hollow. They were also camped down in Hayters Gap area. There was the story of Mr. Thomas who had thirteen sons fighting for the south. The Yankees took the old man up where the old Fullen house is and shot him. He wore a felt hat, for many years that old hat hung on a fence post there near the lane. That is now Roan Lane. I remember seeing an old hat there and was told about the murder of Mr. Thomas.
There was the story of the soldier who stole a saddlebag of gold bullion during the battle of Saltville. The old road went down poor valley back of some of the places. He got shot in his escape with the gold. Roy Snead said his grandfather told him about it. They found the horse and the body up behind Ernest Perkins house on the old road. He said the saddle bags were never found. Somewhere along the old road there is a saddle bag of gold bullion, but nobody has ever found it. Submitted by Sue
