In 1963 I was training on the New River with an engineer unit out of Fort Belvoir, VA. We had been bridging all day and had been given the evening off to recuperate as lifting the heavy bridge components was tiring. We lived in large tents near some concrete pads. At night copperhead snakes often laid out on the concrete. We all tried to avoid them. At about 12 o'clock at night I went outside the tent to urinate. Then I heard a voice say ''watch out

for them snakes.'' I turned around and saw an old man in a mining hat. He immediately vanished.
I ran into the tent and awakened my NCO only to

be told to shut up and go back to sleep. The next day the company first sergeant asked me to describe what I witnessed as he had had a similar encounter. When the chaplain, a catholic priest, came to conduct Sunday services, he sprinkled holy water around and blessed the site.
