Many years ago I stayed in the Hampshire House. I believe it was a bed and breakfast. They were low on rooms, and I stayed in what I believe the bedroom of the owner who was out of town. There was a fireplace, but I was only given sterno cans. I took off my shoes. I was young then and knew where they had been when I got into bed. I locked the bedroom door. It had a latch that could only be opened from the inside. I turned out all the lights after lighting the sterno, so I could enjoy the flames as I fell asleep.
That morning I opened my eyes, and I was facing the closed window shade. I was startled when the first thing I saw was the face of a middle-aged man. I blinked hard, and it was gone. I thought maybe I was still half asleep, but then I noticed that the overhead light in the room was on, and when I got out of bed to put my shoes back on they were on the other side of the room. I have never found anything on the internet about hauntings at this location, but I would love to know if anyone ever does an investigation.

The banks of the South Branch River have been haunted since before the area was settled by whites. The local Indians knew the banks of the river in this are to be haunted by evil spirits and were cautious around here. If you go down to the river in the early morning you can see shadow figures moving around on the banks of the river on both sides for a few miles up and down the river from Romney. There are different theories about what exactly is going on down at the river, demons or ghosts, but it's certain that it is some type of haunting. Submitted by anonymous
