In the early 1970s my family moved to a two-story-four-bedroom house in Homewood, Alabama. Now the neighborhood was somewhat exclusive and high-dollar. In the 1970s it was much more average with many homes looking somewhat neglected. My brother and I were tired of apartment life and were very thankful to finally have an actual house. Our mother surprised us with news of our new home by parking in front of it and letting us out of the car. On first glance

we teased her and said she got a really good deal on the house because it was haunted. We had seen such things in old comic movies on television. We joked.

English ivy grew up the front wall to the roof of our demurely green house. The former owner (s) left two old sofas in the living room. My brother claimed them for his downstairs bedroom. I chose a small upstairs bedroom that had excellent natural lighting. Our mother claimed the upstairs master bedroom and declared that our grandmother would have the other downstairs bedroom. We moved in.
