My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Key West. One night we decided it would be a fabulous idea to check out Key West Cemetery. We came to his decision after drinking the late afternoon and evening away it should be said, though I am not making excuses for my behavior. By this time it was late, around 10:30 pm or so. We scaled the fence and walked around laughing and talking about this and that. After being in the cemetery for awhile I decided I needed to pee. This not being my proudest moment, I squatted right there. While peeing, I remarked to my husband, ''well, she's certainly not resting in peace now. '' After I said that we remained seated on the foot of her grave.
Not a minute after I sat down I heard a woman's voice say ''there's somebody in here. '' I froze. I looked at my husband, and he held his index finger to his lips and told me to remain quiet. He crouched down and looked around, expecting to see security guards, just as I did. Then we heard a male voice very clearly but distant sounding, ''we've got to get them out of here. You go that way, and I'll go this way, and we will find them. '' The male's voice sounded like it was farther off and behind my husband back, like the other side of the cemetery whereas the woman's voice sounded like it was behind me and to the right on the far side of the cemetery near the street.

I told my husband we needed to get out of there, and we'd been caught by security. He nodded. Again, we heard the female voice, ''do you see them? We've got to get them out of here. '' The male voice replied immediately, ''no. They aren't supposed to be here. '' At this point I steered realizing that I didn't see any flashlights. I stood up, and my husband nervously followed and looked around too. We both seemed to arrive at this epiphany at the same time. As he looked at me, I looked at him, both wide eyed and fearful. But also a bit confused. I was intrigued because I've always been a sensitive, and this was unreal!!

Then I heard the woman's voice in my right ear, cold and frigid on my skin, ''you aren't supposed to be here. You aren't welcome here. GET OUT!!!'' My husband clearly heard it, and he took off running leaving me in the dust. I ran behind him and grabbed him trying to get him to stop because I was having a moment of proof. This was undeniable proof that all those years and things I'd heard were real, and here finally someone was with me. He stopped for a second, and reached out for my hand.
As we were running the first time, we only heard the male and a female's voices. They repeated themselves, chanting ''you aren't supposed to be here. Get out. You aren't supposed to be here. '' When we froze and listened, he in disbelief, me in excitement we were suddenly deafened by the roar of a chorus of voices all chanting different things. All of the voices had different pitches and tones. Some were distinctly male; some were distinctly female, one was speaking in Spanish I believe? Or French? I don't remember, and I could not understand them, but those two original voices were louder over the rest and still repeating the same thing they had been saying. One voice said, ''what are they doing here?'' Another said, ''get them out now!'' Ever walk into a room full of hundreds of people? A congregation, maybe after church when everyone is talking? It was just like that but LOUDER. When the chorus of voices started my husband took off. He dragged me some and then just gave up and took off toward the fence. I was right behind, but still not quite as fast. He had a head start and all. I ran and fell, tripping on a grave, and when I got up felt ice cold. Mind you, this is Key West. I really ran this time. I scaled hat fence so fast I ripped my shorts almost to the waist from getting stuck on the iron fence top.
I fell all the way to the ground once on the other side, and my husband was already on our mo-ped. The craziest part is how deaf I was once on the other side. My ears were ringing, not from the chorus of voices, but from the complete silence of the street and surrounding neighborhood. Not a sound. No birds, nothing. I can't really explain to you how startling it is to go from being in a roaring amphitheater to the complete silence of the dead of night. I lay there in shock staring at the graveyard from the other side of the fence, and it was so peaceful and calm.
