Over the last twenty-four years we have gotten to know our ''Mr. Ghost,'' as we call him, quite well. He has become far more adept at communicating, and my wife and I have become more capable of sensing him when he is around. He does come about half the time when we call him although if there are people visiting that he does not know, he keeps his presence (assuming he is there) clandestine. bright-white ''ball of light'' that hovered in mid air right in my path, not more than ten feet away. When I saw it, I heard (not with my ears but with

some other pathway) a voice say ''It's fine that you know I'm here, but it's best we don't communicate. '' It was a firm and fatherly (but, not stern) voice (almost instructional. ) As soon as it had delivered the mail, it whooshed away. That was about sixteen years ago.
Since then Mr. Ghost has learned to make white noise over the intercom when he is upset if a family member has been away for a long time. He would turn lights back on that I have
