This happened in the Lakebottom neighborhood at a duplex from the 1920s or before. Right after we moved in, the house alarm started randomly going off for no reason. We called the alarm company, and they told us where the kill switch was. That fixed it for a day or so. Then it started going off again. We called them back, and they told us where to cut the electrical power to the alarm. That fixed it for a day or so. Then it started going off again.

We called them back, and they said there may be a battery back-up, so while we were on the phone with them, we pulled the battery and all the wires from

the alarm. It continued to go off.
We had them come out and uninstall it. No more shrieking alarm. Sometime during all this, we kept hearing footsteps in the attic. We knew it wasn't us, and the guy on the other side of the duplex swore it wasn't him, but they were clearly footsteps, not squirrels. There were not bats, feet in boots or something heavy, walking around in the attic. There was no explanation for that one.
