In the mid 1990s we purchased the old Asbury estate. We had just finished a tour in Germany and were eager to raise our children on the farm. Promptly I set out to strip years and layers of old paint from the beautiful Heart of Pine floors, mantles, and architectural accents about the house. We also started the outside stripping of later add-ons, not original to the house.
The upstairs had no central air or heat, so I decided to keep the carpeting

on the floors until the children left the home. Many times after I took the children to school and started my work on the wood work, I would hear heeled
|
shoes walking on hardwood floors from bedroom to bedroom, as to inspect rooms for cleanliness. I would ask ''who's there?'' secretly hoping they would reveal themselves.
One Christmas we had friends joining us for dinner. The dining room was festively decorated to period. I was in the attached kitchen, just off the dining room when I heard a loud crash. The children were upstairs, and all promptly yelled ''we're all upstairs'' as if worried
