As we pulled up to the house the woman and her husband came to meet us. I think they were Mennonites. They spoke of the ''living family'' who owned the family cemetery and said that the family clan had always stayed together. She asked me why I was not ''with the family. '' I told her that my family had moved away in 1889 and that we lost touch with that side of the family. When I mentioned that date the husband seemed to realize why my family left

(because my side had joined the Latter-Day Saints Church and were being persecuted by the others who did not). He said that everyone in town had a book

chronicling the history of Hephzibah, and he ran in to get it. The woman went on to say that this family controlled the town since the 1700s and had intermarried with three main families since that time. She told me where to find them at the city hall and said that I needed to ask permission before going into this graveyard. Then she added ''but let me say a word of advice to you.
