Shortly after the construction of the Atkison County Courthouse the clock tower was used as a place of execution for a man. The man denied his guilt to the end declaring that all would know his innocence after his death because the four faced clock would never work right again. This was in the early 1900s. To this day the clock there does not keep correct time if it works at all even though it has been replaced with a modern electric clock.
