I am from Chapel Hill and have been many times looking for the ghost light. It appears at night and will sway back and forth across the tracks. You'll look one way and see it. Then look the other way and it is as if it has passed you and it is continuing on down the tracks.
Legend goes that a man working for the train depot was doing his nightly rounds of checking the tracks when he slipped and fell and a train came and decapitated him. He is supposed to be searching for his head with a lantern.

I have never investigated to see if the accident did indeed happen. Some say it may be a case of swamp gas effect. Seems like the best time to see the light is to go when it is misty out at night.

Comment by Melanie: My mother told me about the time her and her friends went looking to see if they could see the man with the light and she said they actually saw it, and when they went to leave the car stalled over the tracks and the light came through the car along with a cold chill that raised every hair on their body and after it passed the car started. They never went back.
